Due Wednesday 9/3

READING
"Necropolis" by Jeff Chang and "Robert Moses" by Philip Lopate. Both of these readings are in the course reader, which you can get at Far Better Copy on Hillel Place.
"Song of the Open Road" -- please finish reading the entire poem, including the sections we didn't get to in class today.
A Writer's Reference, pages 7-8 and 57-66
Please also take a minute to read through the syllabus.

WRITING/RESEARCH [all homework assignments must be typed]
Re: Chang and Lopate
--A one-paragraph summary of each of the two essays. What is each man's "thesis"? What evidence does each offer to drive home his point?
--One sentence about which essay you find most convincing, or what your take is on the two essays. Who, if anyone, is "right," and why? Approach this like you would a thesis statement. If you were writing a paper about these two essays, what would your thesis statement be?
--A list of 3 books or essays that you would use to do further research if you were writing a paper about these two essays. Please include one sentence about each source--why did you choose it?

Re: Whitman
Make a list of words and phrases that Whitman associates with the road. These can be synonyms for the word 'road,' adjectives that he uses to describe the road, or images that he associates with the road. Aim to have 20 items on your list.
